Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen through empowering young people with the inspiration and tools to make a difference – for our communities, for animals and for the environment. It is a unique programme that channels the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of young people to an extremely positive cause – making the quality of life better for people and animals and ensuring a better future for our planet. Our key aims that we strive for are as follows: Whitehouse Enterprises![]() Whitehouse Enterprises runs as a social enterprise, and is supported by Suffolk County Council, providing employment for adults with disabilities or disadvantages. All employees receive full support and training during their time working at Whitehouse Enterprises and it is with this in mind that the business prides themselves on their high levels of quality and customer satisfaction. The newest department to operate from Whitehouse Enterprises is the outdoor furniture department. Manufacturing benches, play equipment, shelters plus much more out of 100% recycled plastic. They have helped many local businesses, schools and parish councils reduce their carbon footprint. Not only are all products environmentally friendly, they have major financial and non-financial benefits to the customer too. Lasting on average four times longer than a traditional wooden product, they are also low maintenance. Being rot proof and weather resistant there is no requirement to use paints or preservatives. The material is also family friendly because it is chip, crack and splinter proof and the products made are vandal resistant as graffiti can be rubbed off, are not flammable and due to the weight they cannot be stolen without specialised equipment. In addition to all of this, at the end of the products life it can be melted down and recycled once again. At this years Eco-Schools Show, there will be the opportunity to speak to the outdoor furniture team and sample some of the products made. A catalogue can be taken away to look at and a 10% discount voucher will be handed out to all visitors. Fairtrade Foundation![]() The way you spend your money has tremendous power to affect the lives of people in other parts of the world. Many products we enjoy in the UK (such as cocoa, tea, coffee and many types of fruit) are grown in Africa, Asia or Latin America, by farmers who earn little for their hard work. Fairtrade ensures farmers earn a decent living. By choosing products with the FAIRTRADE Mark you can ensure that your money is helping people to work their way out of poverty, rather than keeping them there. Learning about Fairtrade helps young people understand how their actions can affect people in the wider world. Fairtrade supports teaching of global citizenship and sustainable development and provides opportunities to enhance many areas of the curriculum. Teaching about Fairtrade can support and contribute towards many awards and initiatives such as DCSF Sustainable Schools and Eco-Schools. The award will give national and international recognition for the school. Working towards the Fairtrade Schools Award is a great way to get pupils and teachers working together on an exciting and challenging project. Beyond learning about issues around Fairtrade pupils develop many new skills, including project management, business and creative skills. To find out more about Fairtrade and the Fairtrade Schools Award please visit us at stand no 11. Eco Plastic Wood![]() Thinking of an outside classroom? Working towards ECO school status? They are the pioneers of our future, and we need to teach them how to look after our world to ensure our survival on this planet. We promote a service which introduces Eco bottles as a drinks bottle into schools, which is made from 100%, recycled plastic materials. We believe that each child would benefit from an Eco bottle, as it teaches them about recycling. It will help them understand the importance and relevance of recycling and will divert them away from the throw-away culture we have today. The bottle will also teach them why it is different to other bottles and the risks and hazards that may apply to other plastics which they will come in to contact with on a daily basis. Water is a vital part of our life and our bodies consists and depends on it. Our brain, for example, is made up of 85% water. If a child gets dehydrated, he/she will be affected in terms of concentration. It is at school when children require almost constant concentration, and keeping them hydrated will keep them alert and able to learn new information. Children are constantly surrounded by brightly coloured sugary drinks that are filled with aspartame, sugar and citric acid. Even as they are steered towards bottled water, worries arise of the dangers of the bottle itself. ![]() Personalised Bottles We provide the service of personalised Eco bottles that can be designed specifically for each school. We can print anything from environmental messages to school logos. The choice is left to the customer. This can be made fun for the children, as competitions can be held to create the best design. This would raise the topic of recycling and promote an environmentally sound way of living among the children. www.eco-bottles.co.uk Green Washroom Systems

![]() Bag2School launched its’ innovative textile collection scheme in 2001 and since then we have paid out over £7 million to schools throughout the UK. Not only does this help raise valuable funds for schools but it also introduces the concept of textile recycling and reuse to the younger generation. A recent DEFRA report highlighted the importance of schooling as an effective means of raising the general level of knowledge to encourage pro-environmental behaviour. Bag2School textile collections are an excellent way to extend a school’s sustainable activity and help to fulfil the criteria for the Purchasing and Waste ‘doorway’ – our society generates an enormous amount of textile waste with over 1.2 million tonnes destined for landfill. Bag2School is part of the Sustainable Clothing Roadmap process and our unique free school collection programme helps to provide REUSE and RECYCLING solutions as well as paying schools £400 per tonne for items collected – money which can be used for equipment, school trips or donated to a charity of the school’s choice. Over 20,000 schools throughout the UK now participate in Bag2School textile collections and we are working closely with Local Authorities helping them to disseminate the key messages of reuse and recycle. We also provide tonnage information to help councils with their reporting criteria. We help schools and other organisations reduce their environmental impact by identifying practical steps they can take and supporting their implementation. EiE uses its expertise and experience to raise awareness and skills in schools so that they can embed changes and achieve sustainable savings of energy and CO2. In 2008/9 EiE worked with 20 secondary schools in the Oxfordshire Independent and State Schools Partnership (OISSP) to improve their energy efficiency. The project not only achieved substantial reductions in energy use but also developed a successful, transferable methodology for turning energy efficiency advice for schools into actions which lead to identifiable financial and environmental savings. “Before the Project we were full of good intentions but hadn’t taken much action on energy efficiency. Having attended the network meetings and had EiE visit the school we were spurred on to take action. This year we have not only reduced energy usage by adjusting controls and lighting but have formed a school wide environment committee to tackle these issues. It has also guided us on how to set the specifications for our refurbishment programme in the summer.” (OISSP member school) In 2009/10 we are using this proven methodology to help Oxfordshire County Council address school energy saving for the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme. The compost is used to grow vegetables by the students as part of the ‘Growing our Futures’ scheme and the vegetables are then used by the kitchen. This creates a perfect ‘green’ circle whilst providing students with an insight into waste and environmental issues, horticulture ,micro-biology and healthy eating.
