The Activity Zone is a chance for pupils to get stuck into a variety of fun eco activities.

Activities will last for approximately 20 minutes or less.

You don't have to book these sessions, just turn up on the day, but please make sure there is a teacher accompanying each group.

Please note: The Activity Zone is a popular area and schools may have to queue for their chosen activity.

Area 1 - Eco-Life Gizmos

With green engineering and academic backgrounds, we source, supply and advise on the perfect range of renewable energy science construction and energy kits and models for your education requirements (and enjoyment). This activity gives pupils the opportunity to build and learn about innovative and original alternatively-powered toys which are great for teaching about alternative sources of power.

For more information visit our website www.ecolifegizmos.co.uk

Area 2 – EDF Energy

This activity gives pupils the opportunity to showcase their creative talents by designing a poster identifying what is important to them on the Pod themes of Energy, Water, Waste, Biodiversity and Transport.

The best poster in each category will be used on the Pod website, materials and all future campaigns!

Area 3 (Morning) - Be Number 1

Be Number 1 is a free-to-schools initiative that will help connect your school, your local athlete and bring your community together.

World-class athlete Robin Simpson will be launching Be Number 1 at this year’s Eco-Schools Show where he will be running through some fitness feats for the children attending the show.

Join Robin Simpson, an endurance athlete and holder of various world records including the Guinness World Record, World’s Fittest Athlete title and see how fit your Eco-team really is; Robin is also aspiring to join the 2012 triathlon team.

Come to the activity area, visit Be Number 1 and tell us your aspiration.

Area 3 (Afternoon) - Sarah Millin – Funky Flip Flops

Come and create eco-style funky flip-flops using everyday waste and scrap store materials.

You can make sandals, flip-flops and trainers, great for illustrating carbon footprints and making Eco-School displays.

Sarah Millin provides a range of ‘Bejewelled’ Art Workshops and INSET which explore the magic of everyday waste materials. Sarah is a freelance artist and educator in arts and recycling. She has worked extensively in schools delivering workshops, providing resource packs and INSET training for teachers.

Area 4 - Royal Horticultural Society – Gardening Workshop

School Gardening is central to the Eco-Schools key topics of Biodiversity, Healthy Living and School Grounds.

A School growing garden is a great way for children to learn where their food comes from and have the chance to learn the important life skill of growing your own food. Growing vegetables and fruit in school can encourage children to eat healthily and provides healthy outdoor exercise. Children can learn first hand the benefits of composting and saving water.

RHS Campaign for School Gardening is a website based resource that will help your school develop its school garden from the planning stage right through to celebrating with the community. There are tips on gardening sustainably and ‘top crops’ that you can sow grown and harvest in the school terms.

Through our ‘benchmarking’ scheme – our scheme of good practice - schools can receive resources, certificates and prizes at each of five levels. In the East of England there is a Regional advisor who offers advice and training through free workshops at schools.

Area 6 - Green Kids Magazine – Poetry Workshop

Green Kids Magazine takes on environmental issues facing the world today in a unique and creative fashion by looking through the eyes of its audience, children aged 5-11. We aim to inform, educate and entertain in a voice that our readers can understand and empathise with. Our topics will open up the world of children’s back yards to a global environment, and allow opportunities for them to interact with the content.

Green Kids Magazine will run a workshop that will teach children how to write Acrostic Poetry and have a chance for their poems to be printed in the September issue of the Magazine; we will pick the most original poem from each workshop and publish it!
